New Blue Ray For Music And Video

Higher definition available

The newest disc formatting being used today is called Blue Ray. Wonder why it is called Blue Ray? Very simple. Present optical disc technologies for writing to DVDs uses a red laser. Blue Ray uses a blue-violet laser instead!

The real difference with Blue Ray Gold isn't color however, it's the fact this technology can compress the data far greater than previous ones. This technology allows a desk to hold 25GB/50GB of data! Imagine the possibilities of being able to copy your home movies or your entire catalog of songs with to a few discs.

And despite the different colored laser, Blue Ray can easily be made backward compatible to DVDs and CDs through the use of an optical pickup unit. This is extremely important as it can be frustrating when you get a new computer and it has a new style of drive in it and you can't read old discs.

Obviously, the larger amount of data will also allow a higher definition for movies to be contained in these kinds of discs. What's more, Sony plans to use what they term "Blu-Ray" disks in their PlayStation 3. Once again, higher definition will mean higher quality playback on your games. Think about how much that will add to your gaming experience.

It will be interesting to see in the future how Blue Ray technology plays out. There are a number of manufacturers [up to 170 at this time] already using it, but it is a bit expensive and there are newer technologies coming out that use the old red laser technology that they claim will be cheaper than the Blue Ray components. Seven of the eight leading movie studios are also using Blue Ray technology for their video discs.

In the long run, of course, the consumer will be the winner as we will be able to get a lot more video and audio on each disc and we will be able to get a higher definition, hence higher quality, in both. The user experience will only get better.
